20 years of METU – Story of Attila Áchim
Budapest Metropolitan University turned 20 years old! With this series, we would like to honor the events and amazing memories of these past two decades by looking back at stories of our students, alumni, professors and staff members who have been with us on this journey.
Meet Attila Áchim, student of our Television production designer MA program.
What is the most important lesson METU has taught you?
That the only way to really learn is from my own mistakes and through my own experiences. Things that I only hear, but cannot experience first-hand, all fade away. It took a lot of practice to make my knowledge stick and to become functional.
Production design is not a profession that you can learn from books. Of course, you can learn the theory - but just like riding a bicycle, you have to practice to really learn and make progress.
What's your first memory of METU?
I remember the feeling of endless opportunities that come with moving to a big city. I grew up in Szolnok, so starting my studies alone in the capital city was a huge step for me.
Tell us about a significant experience (the kindest, funniest, most exciting or most important) connected to the university!
The most memorable moment for me was when I realized that I am not going to write screenplays. It was a very determining realization that I feel more confident behind the camera than in front of a paper. Of course, this was the after-effect of numerous dramaturgy classes. I am very happy that I came to this realization - I have been working behind the camera ever since and I love it.
What do you think lies behind the success of METU?
METU provides opportunity to learn and master professions that before were accessible for very few, or privileged students only.
Where do you see METU in 5-10 years?
I believe that METU can become better and better by focusing on the quality of teaching and continuously evolving teaching materials and teachers. It is not an easy task, but I am certain that with good leadership, the university will be able to do it. I believe that just like I have seen in the past years, more and more students will choose METU in the future.
