20 years of METU – Story of Dr Zsolt Király
Budapest Metropolitan University turned 20 years old! With this series, we would like to honor the events and amazing memories of these past two decades by looking back at stories of our students, alumni, professors and staff members who have been with us on this journey.
Meet Dr Zsolt Király, our professor and Head of Human Resources (BSc) program.
How did you end up at METU?
In an unlikely and quick turn of events, after three years of changing workplaces every year looking for a place where I could have freedom to create.
In October 2016, my mentor and previous PhD supervisor connected me with Dr Zsolt Baranyai, who was then the Head of the Institute of Business at Budapest Metropolitan University. We quickly found common ground and soon I was moving on to my new workplace. This is how I became a professor at METU in February 2017.
What's your first memory of METU?
My first memory of METU is an event for professors which was organized in January 2017, before I officially started working at the university. I felt like Alice in Wonderland. Unlike what I was used to at my previous workplaces, here I was met with a fresh, high-spirited atmosphere and very gainful experiences.
I was incredibly impressed by the collective way of thinking and creating, the mutual experience sharing between professors and the indicator-based campaign overview of the marketing team. I immediately felt that I have arrived at my destination. I have never seen this level of professionalism in any of the higher education institution where I have previously worked at. Of course, I have experienced many things since then, but this memory remains very decisive.
Can you share any determining experiences you had at METU?
I would like to share a series of experiences which I can thank two of my colleagues, Ágnes Saághy and Szilvia Szabó. It is a real treasure to work, think, create and build things together in a team with them. It is extremely rare to find this level of professionalism, humility, diligence and compassion in someone. The fact that our values and perspectives are also in line is the cherry on top.
I will always be thankful to them, not only because of our successes and achievements together, but also because of how we are able to connect and bond with each other.
Where do you see METU in 5-10 years' time?
In our ever-changing, turbulent world it is difficult enough to tell what will happen in the coming year, let alone what will happen to a university in 5-10 years.
It is not hard to see that higher education institutes, including Budapest Metropolitan University will face huge challenges. Nevertheless, I see huge potential in our institution. The question is whether we will be brave enough and willing to use these opportunities. If METU continues to focus on having more and more professors with active real-life experience; if it is able to strenghten its active, profitable, win-win-based business and market relationships; if the art and business faculties can collaborate effectively; if it can take on the myBRAND concept more bravely; and if it is brave enough to innovate in a slow-moving industry, then it will be able to grow into a successful university and organization.
What do you think lies behind the success of METU?
We can define success in many ways, from many different perspectives. In my understanding of success and based on my experiences and expectations, in the past few years METU has arrived at the door to success. Now the question remaining is what the next step will be...
