20 years of METU – Story of István Urbán
Budapest Metropolitan University turned 20 years old! With this series, we would like to honor the events and amazing memories of these past two decades by looking back at stories of our students, alumni, professors and staff members who have been with us on this journey.
Meet István Urbán, Director of Facilities Management at METU.
How did you end up at METU?
When I left the world of media looking for a new challenge, my wife was already working at METU’s admission office. She told me that the university was looking for a facilities director. Of course, I heard many great things about the institution beforehand, and METU seemed like an attractive, stable workplace. I applied for the position, and I got hired. :) It has been 10 years since then, so I believe I can say I was right.
What's your first memory of the university?
I remember exactly – my first memory is about the paneling of the F214 meeting room, because one of my interview questions was related to this. :)
Tell us about your most determining experiences (the kindest, funniest, most exciting or most important) connected to the university!
In my first year at the university, I got into the project of the construction and preparation of the campus in Hódmezővásárhely with limited related experience. I wouldn’t say it was funny, but it was a real challenge, through which I learned a great deal in a very short time. This period was really determining for my work later on.
What do you think lies behind the success of METU?
I think the success of METU lies in the commitment and passion that can be found in all departments. Whatever may happen, we will deal with it – and this is not only true for my close colleagues and my own team. This is an outstanding virtue and a rock-solid foundation to build upon.
Where do you see METU in 5-10 years' time?
I think the past 20 years, from which I was able to be with METU in 10, have proven that our university plays a very prominent role in the field of Hungarian higher education. This is increasingly true internationally as well. I believe everything is given to achieve further successes and growth, so this is what I expect from the upcoming 5 years. And a beautiful new campus, as many of us do. :)
