20 years of METU – Story of Laura Téglási
Budapest Metropolitan University turned 20 years old! With this series, we would like to honor the events and amazing memories of these past two decades by looking back at stories of our students, alumni, professors and staff members who have been with us on this journey.
Meet Laura Téglási, our Employee Experience Specialist.
How did you end up at METU?
I started working at Budapest Metropolitan University as a trainee with a fix-term contract for 6 months, and as I fit well in the team, I was invited to join the HR department as a full-time employee. I accepted the offer because I really liked my team, I had many opportunities for professional development, I received meaningful tasks and I could also shape my own work processes. Here I am not only a cog in the machinery, but a useful member of the institution, and I never felt like I was not taken seriously because of my age or lack of experience.
What's your first memory of METU?
My first memory is from my job interview. I didn’t know much about METU or about job hunting, as I was only a third-year university student with relatively little work experience. It is interesting to look back - those who were interviewing me at the time have been my colleagues for four years now. I couldn’t have known back then what a great place METU will become for me.
Tell us about your most determining experiences (the kindest, funniest, most exciting or most important) connected to the university!
My favorite memories are those from community events. I remember my first day at METU, and how great it was to hang out with colleagues I did not see every day. I love competing, especially in teams. As I always strive to win, winning a team competition and the grand prize was a really determining experience for me. I have been hyped about community events ever since.
What do you think lies behind the success of METU?
Without doubt, the success of METU lies in its people. I am not just saying this because I am an HR professional, but because here, your personality really matters. We have many colleagues at our institute who are key figures.
METU is not just a workplace: we have a common goal, and we are all pushing our own limits every day to achieve this. We are not programming robots here. We are educating individuals, who think critically, and who value creativity and mutual respect. We believe in transparency and in balance.
Where do you see METU in 5-10 years' time?
I believe in 5-10 years from now, METU will not only still be the biggest private university of Hungary, but it will also become a key institution on the market in our region.
I hope that the university will be able to break free from the stereotypes about private universities. I would like more and more people to realize the importance of creativity and that real knowledge does not come from textbooks, but from experiences.
METU will await its students with practice-oriented programs and opportunities that will be one-of-a-kind on the market. METU will become a real opinion leader and a prestigious workplace, but at the same time it will keep its friendly atmosphere.
