20 years of METU – Story of Lúcia Mészáros

Budapest Metropolitan University turned 20 years old! With this series, we would like to honor the events and amazing memories of these past two decades by looking back at stories of our students, alumni, professors and staff members who have been with us on this journey.

Meet Lúcia Mészáros, our alumna.

How did you end up at METU? Why did you choose to study at the university?

A dear friend I attended drawing classes with in Szekszárd got accepted to METU’s Craftsman Artist program. In the next academic year, I also submitted my application.

What's your first memory of METU?

My first memory of METU is being half an hour late from the art aptitude test.  I haven’t visited Budapest too many times before back then - and unfortunately, I navigated myself to the wrong Rózsa street in a different district. Up until today, I am very thankful that I was allowed to take part in the test despite this.

Tell us about a determining experience (the kindest, funniest, most exciting or most important) connected to the university!

My most determining experience from university was meeting Edina Mihálkovics. I grew up with her fashion illustrations from the Glamour magazine.  During my university years, my illustrations were published in numerous fashion magazines in Hungary, and thus I was able to make it into Forbes’ prestigious 30 Under 30 list in 2018.

Looking back, my most exciting experiences were my diploma thesis defenses. It is difficult to look at your diploma collection in a holistic way during the process of designing and execution. But as you are presenting your collection, the many hours of work you have put into it up until the final touches finally become real. It’s really magical how your ideas are turned into reality.

Finally, my kindest memories are connected to my friends who shape me and bring joy to my life every day – and hopefully will do so for the rest of our lives.

Can you share any experiences at METU that had a great impact on your professional career?

My professors had the greatest impact on me and my professional career. They could always bring out a new side of me. They taught me how to step out of my comfort zone. This is how I was able to learn more and more about myself in each semester, which I still build upon during my professional work.

My diploma collections from my Bachelor’s and Master’s studies are complete opposites of each other - but it makes me really happy that both became this successful and are still getting photographed by magazines until today.

Which words would you use to describe your experience at the university?

Diligence, determination and humility.

I have been deliberately preparing to pursue a career in arts for many years. I was filled with determination every day as I stepped through the door of the university. I always listened to my professors with the greatest humility, as they are all outstanding professionals.

What would you tell your university-student self?

Every hour of your hard work will pay off – even tenfold! :)

If you could use a time capsule to go back to your university years, is there anything you would do differently?

I wouldn’t change a thing. I am glad I was able to become an ambassador – otherwise I would not be able to share these experiences and thoughts with you.

What do you think, what is the superpower of METU?

The know-how, preparedness and mentoring approach of the professors. The workrooms are also very well-equipped, and you have access to these anytime, even if you want to come to the university to work on your projects on Saturdays.

What superpower did you gain thanks to the university?

I have gained diversified professional knowledge and a valuable social network.

What is the most important lesson METU has taught you?

That hard work always pays off.

Where do you see METU in 5-10 years’ time?

I believe it will be one of the trendiest, most desirable institution for young people.  I hope that in some way I can also be part of these coming 5-10 years. :)
