20 years of METU – Story of Péter Polgár

Budapest Metropolitan University turned 20 years old! With this series, we would like to honor the events and amazing memories of these past two decades by looking back at stories of our students, alumni, professors and staff members who have been with us on this journey.

Meet Péter Polgár, alumnus of our Communication and media-studies MA program.

How did you end up at METU? Why did you choose to study at the university?

It was after a few years of working that I realized that the path for me was in the field of communication. I joined my current workplace, Brightly Communication Agency at the end of 2017, and although I believe professional experience is really important and valuable, I always thought that in order to really dive into the depths of my field, I needed to support this with relevant studies. This is why I choose to enroll at METU’s Communication and media-studies MA distance learning program in 2018.

Budapest Metropolitan University was always famous for providing outstanding programs in the field of communication, and thanks to the professors, I was not disappointed.

Tell us about your most significant experiences (the kindest, funniest, most exciting or most important) connected to the university!

Besides our studies, the greatest value of the university lies in its community and those we establish close relationships with – both professionally and personally. Although I was enrolled in a distance course, I am lucky to have made lifelong friends with two of my classmates, Vera Baranyai and Judit Boros, who have also managed to start their career in the field of communications.

Can you share any experiences at METU that had a great impact on your professional career?

The biggest advantage of METU is its people-oriented approach and the practical teaching methods. It is not easy to not only deliver the course materials, but also to add creative flair to classes at the same time. However, our professors – among them Dr. Rita Lukács, Dr Györgyi Rétfalvi and Dr András Murai – managed to teach us in a practical, enjoyable, understandable, hands-on and interesting way.

I think it’s rare to have a master’s course where you can learn how to use both social media platforms, video editing softwares and camera usage in detail. We had the opportunity to master all of these, and everything fit perfectly into the whole structure of the program.

Where do you see METU in 5-10 years' time?

I believe the current direction of the university can be very successful, as it is unique in Hungary. Students can choose from a wide range of practice-oriented programs which also provide them with sound theoretical knowledge.

When looking into the future, I see potential in deepening, rather than expanding the available programs. I believe making our institutional structure and programs better, stronger, and more reputable at home and abroad could be the solution. The opportunities provided by METU work really well together, therefore I support improving these even further rather than introducing new programs. Strengthening our international relationships and joining more scholarship programs abroad (in which professors and researchers can also participate) could create a strong foundation for the future. I am sure many others think similarly and support this path as well.
