20 years of METU – Story of Sára Szatmári
Budapest Metropolitan University turned 20 years old! With this series, we would like to honor the events and amazing memories of these past two decades by looking back at stories of our students, alumni, professors and staff members who have been with us on this journey.
Meet Sára Szatmári, student of our Commerce and Marketing BSc program.
What's your first memory of METU?
My best friend started her studies at one of METU’s art programs in 2017 and this was how I was introduced to this open-minded and motivated community. At the time I was studying at a different institute, so I have been spending my freetime with these two different groups. After a while I realized that I felt closer to METU’s community. At first I was hesitant about change, but in the end I really found my place at METU.
Tell us about a determining experience (the kindest, funniest, most exciting or most important) connected to the university!
I really liked the events organized by the university. One of my best memories is from a Halloween party, where we all strolled through the city in costumes doing a pub crawl. It really felt like the world was ours.
Later during my studies, I was able to take part in numerous exciting projects. My favourite part was working and creating together with fellow students. For example, when I was attending a course on event management, I could ask the art students to help me with visual representation.
What is the most important lesson METU has taught you?
The most important lesson I have learned was to be daring to change and start over. I have missed many opportunities in my life before because I could only focus on how I could fail. But at METU I was always encouraged by students and professors to try myself in more and more fields. Fortunately, the university offers countless opportunities through different programs, events and organizations.
What do you think lies behind the success of METU?
METU does not want to change, restrain or force anything on its students. Here we can make the most of ourselves if we make the effort. This environment kept encouraging me to develop further, but never for a minute have I felt that I should be someone else.
Where do you see METU in 5-10 years' time?
I hope that Budapest Metropolitan University will continue to treat the opinions and personality of its students in the same open-minded and welcoming way. It would be great if even more partner institutions could support this diversity.
