20 years of METU – Story of Tamás Major
Budapest Metropolitan University turned 20 years old! With this series, we would like to honor the events and amazing memories of these past two decades by looking back at stories of our students, alumni, professors and staff members who have been with us on this journey.
Meet Tamás Major, Project leader at METU’s Directorate of Customer Service and Studies.
How did you end up at METU?
I don’t exactly fit into the concept of ‘20 years of METU’, as I only joined the university in the halftime, with the purchase of Heller Farkas College in 2010. I have been wondering ever since - was it the College and its programs, or my humble self that they wanted to acquire? So, I did not choose METU, METU chose me. :)
What's your first memory of METU?
My first memory is from the meeting back at Heller Farkas College. This was where the merge with Budapest College of Communication and Business (former name of METU) was announced, and I learned more about the institution.
I first visited the Nagy Lajos campus in the summer of 2010. I felt like a soldier being sent to the border base just after finishing his training, not exactly sure what to do.
Tell us about your most determining experiences (the kindest, funniest, most exciting or most important) connected to the university!
I have worked on every floor of the main building in many different positions. The only thing remaining constant in my work is admissions. It started in Heller Farkas College, and it followed me to education planning, the student centre, the rector’s office, the secretariat and customer services. I was never part of the Admission Office, but we live in symbiosis. :)
My funniest memories are from a team building trip to lake Balaton. I won’t share these for GDPR and other reasons. :)
What do you think lies behind the success of METU?
I have met many amazing people here at the college-university in the past decade. Both professors, directors, employees from different faculties and close colleagues. I am not a very social person - and while I may be very introverted, the environment and people around me are determining for me.
I think these people are the ones who make METU successful. They are the ones who keep things rolling at the university with their ideas, work, positive vibes and presence.
Where do you see METU in 5-10 years' time?
I will be sitting here in one of the university’s offices, a bit deranged and doubled with age, with my colleagues organizing a few memorial concerts in my honor every once in a while. :)
If METU will still have a community this good, we will definitely meet in the ‘30 years of METU’ project again. :)
