Cultural Spaces field trip to Pécs
Our Art and Design Management MSc students have recently participated in a field trip to Pécs as part of their Cultural Spaces course. This kind of field trips are a usual part of our Art and Design management program.
The aim of the fieldwork was to gain insight into the life of cultural institutions of a Hungarian town and learn about the local cultural spaces. Pécs occupies a special place among the cities of Hungary as has an extremely significant cultural past, and has always been considered a kind of island in the cultural scene. Suffice to say that Hungary's first university was established in Pécs and it is still one of our most important university cities. Also, numerous artists from the 20th-21st century have started out from Pécs. Ten years ago, no one was surprised that Pécs had successfully applied for the title of European Capital of Culture. One of the main phenomena of the cultural riches of Pécs, is the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter- a peculiar cultural space that carries the local past and represents the present and the future. The Zsolnay Quarter is made up of several noteworthy institutions, such as the Zsolnay Factory, new galleries, the largest and most significant of which is the M21 gallery, museums, puppet theater and university stage, concert hall, knowledge center library, public spaces, playgrounds, planetarium, shops, and cafes.
Getting to know this special and unprecedented cultural institution was the aim of a one-day fieldtrip.
