METU alumna success: Sabrina Komár becomes Best New Talent at BIFA 2020
Sabrina Komár, alumna of our Fashion and Textile Design MA program is a creative talent of many arts: her photography works won multiple awards and became the Best New Talent at Budapest International Photo Awards 2020.
Sabrina’s story is an amazing example for all those students at METU who are inspired by the different forms of art and people of diverse majors they meet on our campuses. Her achievements underline how fruitful following your own path and letting your creativity soar and can be.
Coming from a non-artist family, Sabrina first became an economist after high school, but she was always looking to live a creative life. This is how she ended up enrolling in the Fashion and Textile Design MA program of Budapest Metropolitan University at the age of 38, from where she graduated in 2020.
In an interview made by BIFA, Sabrina shared that she feels that she has finally found her own path since working on her degree project at METU. She believes this was the point where the personal-initiated creative process started in her.
Sabrina has been taking photos since a young age, and she loves to combine her pictures with other artistic techniques, for example with textile art. Instead of a future profession, she sees photography as a personal-initiated creative process, a way of expressing her own feelings, experiences and thoughts.
Budapest International Photo Award was among the very first competition Sabrina has entered with her photography works, and the first one where she has received an award – or to be exact, multiple awards.
Sabrina won six awards for the four projects she has submitted to BIFA 2020. She received
three Gold awards in the 2020 Fine Art Collage and Portrait categories with her works Monologue, Locked Into and In- and Outside, while You Don'T Seem to Be
The most successful artwork she submitted was Monologue, which won the overall 1st Place in the 2020 Fine Art category on top of the Gold award in the Collage category. Sabrina also received the ‘Best New Talent 2020 Fine Art’ award for this piece of work.
Sabrina shared that her winning work was a visual representation of her inner monologue, and the constant conflict and struggle with herself.
When asked to give advice to hobbyphotographers who have yet to show their work to the world, Sabrina emphasized the importance of being open and gathering experience.
‘Find your own style, theme, your visual voice. Don’t be afraid to show your work, take it as a possibility. Try to learn handling criticism. (This last one I am still learning; it is not easy).’

BIFA 2020 was only the beginning of Sabrina’s success story as a photographer. In Spring 2021, she won third place in the Photomanipulation category of the 7th FAPA (Fine Art Photography Awards), and at the IPA (International Photo Awards) 2021, all three of her submitted art projects – Analysis, Monologue and [inside] - received the ‘Honorable Mention’ award. Sabrina was delighted about her achievement, as IPA is a very reputable competition with more than 14,000 submissions this year.
