The conference is held online on 26th March revealing the findings of the latest research, and where the participants will have a discussion and debate. One participant is Dr Melanie Kay Smith, Associate Professor in the  Tourism and Marketing Institute at Metropolitan University. 

 

The participants of the WellSpaV4 Project research were Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia. 

The central question of the project covers the opportunities lying in the thermal and medical spas, especially due to their change of function. 

Earlier, in these countries these medical spas having natural resources were used in medical therapies, but by now they have become the leading economic sector in tourism as due to their special characteristics these medical spas have become unbelievably popular with tourists.  

Whereas in the past they were in state ownership and they were mainly used for medical purposes, nowadays they have brand new functions, and the infrastructure must adapt to these new changes. Therefore, the research focuses on the opportunities and challenges lying in the infrastructure development, such as the modernization of facilities and the improvement of the quality of services.  

The research used the so-called Delphi method (a qualitative research method using the opinion of experts in the specialist field involved in the research), and during which the researchers made interviews in the matter with 28 thermal spa experts.
