STEAMTeach training day at Budapest Metropolitan University
The 2nd full-day teacher training organised by Budapest Metropolitan University as part of the Strategic Partnership Project for Secondary Schools STEAM Education for Teaching Professionalism (Erasmus+ 2020-1-ES01-KA201-082102) took place on Saturday 26 March 2022.
The STEAMTeach training day was an onsite training activity with the participation of 15 secondary school practice teachers coming to Budapest from various regions of the country.
Participants of the event could take part on different workshops, each focusing on a methodological tool of choice. The workshops were organised by four secondary school practice teachers who were also members of the project’s professional team.
The event started with the welcome speech of Dr. Ferenc Kiss, vice-rector for innovation of METU. Then, Dr. Vilmos Vass presented the objectives and expected results of the STEAMTeach project, as well as the aims and outcomes of the training day.
After this brief presentation, the first part of the day continued with a methodological introductory lecture on ‘Pedagogical principles and methodological issues of STEAM education, mapping prior knowledge’, held by two competent lecturers of our institution, Dr. Vilmos Vass and Krisztina Bódis. The presentation also included a handful of practical examples.
At the end of the module, the participants evaluated what they had learned and discussed how these could be used in their teaching work in the future.
The discussion was followed by workshops where the participants were divided into four groups and each group took part in the practical sessions in a separate room in a rotating system.
Each of the four workshop leaders could choose a methodology to deliver the module. The main methodologies used in the teamwork sessions were Project-based learning, Cooperative learning, Interest-based learning and Problem-based learning.
At the end of the workshop, a joint evaluation took place based on the feedbacks and reflections of the participants. At the end of the training day, Dr. Vilmos Vass briefly outlined the remaining as well as the further tasks in the project and other essential information.
