Study International Relations at METU – Eduarda’s experience

Are you interested in how global politics, economy and social relations work? Do you aspire to use foreign languages professionally? Would you like to harness global opportunities in pursuit of your goals?

Then studying International Relations at METU might be a good option for you!

This major will familiarize you with the workings of the architecture, governance tensions and openings of today’s world. You will be able to learn about interesting topics such as international organizations, politics and law, diplomacy, world history and economics, sociology - among many others.

During your studies, you will be able to gain knowledge and skills that help you understand and navigate in the complex transnational fields, forces and actors.

A degree in International Relations opens the door to countless career opportunities and further training directions, whether you are interested in working in the state sector, business sector, or at an NGO, as an advisor, analyst, officer or even as a diplomat.

But what is it like to be a student of this major at METU in reality?

Read the thoughts and first-hand experiences of our student, Eduarda, to get an exclusive insight into our International Relations BA program!

What can you learn on the International Relations program?

International Relations, in a sense, is an inclusive major. It focuses on all activities that take place between nations, for example diplomacy.

As International Relations students, we study the history & present of the world. We look at all the players, and we get to understand the causes and the challenges we face in the world that we live in.  With the knowledge you gain, you can go into journalism or become an advocate, lawyer, foreign service officer, researcher, diplomat and so on. These can all be well paid jobs.

Is International Relations the right program for me?

International Relations isn't only an open door, but a gate to opportunities. If you are passionate about the world, people and feel driven to make a change, then International Relations is for you.

My biggest advice is to do a lot of research on the majors and the university you want to apply to.  Ask questions from the university and from graduates to make sure the course offers what you are looking for.

I am passionate about people - I wanted to know more about why we are the way we are, and why we do what we do. The International relations program allows me to do that. Let's just say that I'm a dreamer with the desire to change a small part world. In order to come up with a solution, you need to know: "what is the problem?"

Why study at METU?

METU stands out from other universities with itvision and diversity.

I believe the vision METU shares with potential students is what attracts them - it’s a powerful vision that people can't help but want to be a part of.

Next to this, METU is somewhat of an international community. There are students from all over the world, and you have the opportunity to interact and learn from each other.

There are also really good and experienced professors at the university.

Favorite course

My favorite course is International Ethics. It is the most interactive course I had during my major - I loved the debates, discussions and topics. During some classes, it was like stepping into the shoes of decision makers and political leader. We could imagine the pressure they feel when making decisions that make an impact on the lives of many citizens.

Favorite teacher

I really admire Professor Viktor Friedmann. He is an incredibly passionate and dedicated expert of his field. He really inspires you to become a better person and to want to learn and know more about the world. He is my favorite teacher. Anytime I needed guidance regarding my major or internship, professor Friedmann was a great mentor. For any student, it is really inspiring to have a teacher like him.
