Training day at Budapest Metropolitan University
In our project of STEAM Education for Teaching Professionalism (Erasmus+ 2020-1-ES01-KA201-082102) Strategic Partnership Project for Secondary Schools, a full-day teacher training took place on Saturday 6 November 2021, organised by the Budapest Metropolitan University. Although the pandemic situation did not favour the event, we managed to organise the training in an attendance format, with 25 practising secondary school teachers participating. Participants came to Budapest from various regions nationwide.
The event was held using the ‘world café’ method with 3 different workshops for the participants, each with a methodological tool of their choice, organised by 4 practising secondary school teachers, also members of the professional team of the project.
First of all, our university professor dr. Vilmos Vass presented the objectives and expected results of the SteamTeach project, as well as the aim of the training day and its outcome. After this brief presentation, the first part of the day was a methodological introductory lecture on ‘Pedagogical principles and methodological issues of STEAM education, mapping prior knowledge’, held by two competent lecturers of our institution, dr. Vilmos Vass and Krisztina Bódis. The presentation was not without practical examples. At the end of the module, the participants evaluated what they had learned and discussed together what could be used in the future in their teaching. It was followed by workshops where the participants were divided into three groups and each group took part in the practical sessions in a separate room, in a rotating system. Each of the 3 workshop leader chose a methodology to deliver the module: Project-based learning, Cooperative learning and Problem-based learning were the main methodologies used in the teamwork sessions.
At the end of the workshop a joint evaluation took place, based on the feedback and reflections of the participants. At the end of the training day, Dr. Vilmos Vass briefly outlined the remaining as well as the further tasks in the project and other information to be covered.
